Overview

The LS luxury sedan has headlined the Lexus lineup since the brand’s inception, but the 2026 model year will be this flagship’s last. Like other LS models that came before it, the 2026 LS500 boasts a quiet, spacious cabin, a generously sized trunk, and a silky-smooth powertrain.

A twin-turbo V-6 with 416 horsepower, a 10-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive come standard. Acceleration is quick enough, but the LS500 is more about comfort, and therefore its creamy ride quality is more likely to impress. Plenty of convenience features are included, but rival luxury sedans from BMW and Mercedes-Benz offer more outright luxury and more advanced tech features.

Expert Tip: A hybrid model called LS500h had previously been offered, and although it’s been discontinued for the 2026 model year, there may be leftover 2025s available at your Lexus dealer.

What’s New for 2026?

This year marks the final run of the LS. To commemorate the occasion, Lexus is producing 250 Heritage Edition LS500s, all painted in Ninety Noir black and rolling on handsome 20-spoke 20-inch wheels.

Inside, the 2026 model comes with a two-tone black and Roja Red interior color scheme, a 23-speaker Mark Levinson stereo system, and headrests that feature an embroidered silhouette of the LS sedan. The hybrid LS500h has been discontinued.

C/D Expert TipC/D Expert Tip:

If this year’s model is largely unchanged and you’re comfortable with a lightly used car, you may want to consider shopping previous model years. A one-to-three-year-old model will likely have a warranty and it’ll cost less than buying new.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

  • Engine: 416-hp twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6
  • Transmission: 10-speed automatic
  • Drivetrain: all-wheel-drive

The Lexus LS500 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 rated at 416 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive and a 10-speed automatic transmission are standard. The setup is tuned for smooth operation and silent running, except under heavy throttle when it exhales with a bit more gusto.

It does a good job as a luxury yacht, but the six-cylinder versions of the BMW 7-series and the Mercedes-Benz S-class lean a bit harder into the sporting paradigm and have proven to be quicker at the test track. So too the Genesis G90, which only comes with a turbo-six. (Of note: It bested the LS500 in a comparison test.) Then there are the V-8-powered versions of the 7-series and S-class, which punch up the performance even further.

Car value calculator

What’s Your Car Worth?

Car and Driver calculates your car’s value in three free and easy steps – using the same Black Book® data dealers use to appraise vehicles.

0–60-MPH Times

  • C/D 60-mph Test: 5.0 seconds

In Comparison: While a 5.0-second run to 60 mph is certainly quick by modern car standards, the BMW 740i and Mercedes-Benz S500 were both quicker, hitting that mark in just 4.9 and 4.5 seconds, respectively.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

  • C/D 75-mph Highway Fuel-Economy Test: 28 mpg
  • EPA City Rating: 17 mpg
  • EPA Highway Rating: 27 mpg

The EPA estimates that the all-wheel drive LS500 should deliver 17 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. The last LS500 we tested managed 28 mpg in our 75-mph highway fuel economy test. For more information about the LS’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

First Row: Of all the reasons to own a full-size luxury sedan, comfort is surely near the top of the list, and the LS does its best to fulfill that mandate. The seats are comfortable and accommodating, quality materials abound, the leather is buttery soft, and wood, glass, and fabric trim options are plentiful. But the overall interior design and control placement can feel a bit random, lacking the cohesive and satisfying tactile feel of competitors.

Second Row: The LS’s rear seat is spacious, and the bench seat is plushly padded for comfort, but rival luxury sedans treat back-seat passengers to more amenities.

Cargo Capacity: The trunk is generously sized and can hold six carry-on suitcases, but the rear seatbacks are fixed, so bulky cargo items may not easily fit in the LS. Both the Audi A8 and the Genesis G90 accommodated the same amount of luggage.

Infotainment and Connectivity

  • Infotainment: 12.3-inch touchscreen
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Audio System: 12-speaker Mark Levinson stereo

A 12.3-inch touchscreen with a centrally positioned power/volume knob serves as an easy access point for infotainment functions, and standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, Amazon Alexa, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. The system also recognizes some voice commands. Thankfully, Lexus has utilized the console space where the finicky touchpad formerly resided for seat heat and ventilation controls; previously, they were buried in the touchscreen interface.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The LS500 comes standard with the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 suite of driver-assistance features.

  • Standard Safety Features: automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control with lane centering.

For information about the LS’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Lexus offers longer powertrain coverage than BMW or Mercedes, but doesn’t match up to Genesis’s plan of 100,000-mile coverage. At least the first maintenance visit is provided free of charge.

  • Limited Warranty: four years or 50,000 miles
  • Powertrain Warranty: six years or 70,000 miles
  • Complimentary Maintenance: 1 year or 10,000 miles
